The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Rome commemorated the 78th Anniversary of the Independence of Sri Lanka with a solemn Flag Hoisting Ceremony held on Wednesday, 4th February 2026 at the “Associazione per la Meditazione di Consapevolezza Vipassanā” at Vicolo d'Orfeo, Rome.
The National Flag was hoisted, followed by the singing of the National Anthem and multi-religious observances conducted by clergy representing the Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic, and Christian faiths, invoking blessings for peace, unity, and prosperity for Sri Lanka and its people.
Independence Day Messages from His Excellency the President, the Honourable Prime Minister, and the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism were read on the occasion.
Addressing the gathering, the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Italy, H.E. Mr. Satya Rodrigo, underscored the significance of independence and emphasised the importance of working collectively towards the rebuilding of Sri Lanka. He expressed his sincere appreciation to the Sri Lankan community in Italy for their generous contributions towards the recovery efforts following the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah. The Ambassador also called for continued support for the identified development projects across various sectors during this rebuilding phase. Ambassador Rodrigo also highlighted and appreciated the contribution and achievements of the Sri Lankan community in Italy to strengthen bonds between Italy and Sri Lanka, and contribute to enrich both nations.
The ceremony was attended by members of the Sri Lankan community residing in Rome, along with the staff of the Embassy of Sri Lanka.
